Name: Ulysses S. Grant Birth-Death Date: April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885 Political Party: Republican Party Terms of office: 2 terms (March 4, 1869 – March 4, 1877) Vice President: Schuyler Colfax (1869–1873); Henry Wilson (1873-1875); None (1875–1877)
Being known as a popular war hero, Ulysses S. Grant came into presidency as a bewildered and often confused President. He will be graded with a C because during his Presidency, political scandals and corruptions such as the Credit Mobilier, Black Friday, and the Whiskey Ring scandal damaged his administration. Another thing that damaged him was bringing his army staff and friends into the white house who in turn were thieves, crooks, and not experienced in the forms of government.Grant supported civil rights for African Americans and ratified the 15th Amendment so that all citizens of any race could vote. Coming into Presidency, Grant decided to follow Lincoln’s ways ofrecontructing the nation as well as the South. He did this by supporting annesty for former Confederates and by signing the Amnesty Act of 1872. He also wanted to revive the Ruplican Party in the South and needed the votes of African Americans. He sent troops down South to suppress the KKKs attacking Southern African Americans. His goal to provide justice to Native Americans failed because he was not always successful in preserving the lands ofthe Native Americans because of the emerging westward pioneers. Even though Americans were sympathetic and wanted to support the Cubans in winning their independence against Spain, Grant’s goal was to avoid war because the nation was trying to recover from the Civil War.Another goal of Grant’s was to annex Santo Domingo because it provided a base for the U.S. Navy to house its operations. This goal failed the public opinion had turned against the treaty and it disappeared from public debate and also fialed to pass in the Senate.
Grant and Congress had good relations and disagreed on certain issues. Grant held the majority in the Senate for his two terms of office and held a majority in the house of Representatives except for the last two years when the democrats dominated the house of Reps. Grant wanted to aviod a fight with Spain but Congress intended on supporting the rebels of Cuba by attempting to pass a resolution against Spain but failed. Congress passed Enforcement Acts to protect the right to vote such as the KKK Act in which Grant signed to stop the rise of terroist actions in the South.During the Panic of 1837, Grant veteod the inflation bill which would have brought more greenbacks into the economy. Afterward, Grant signed the Specie Resumption Act in which the government placed a currency on gold and removed the greenbacks from the circulation.
The most positive action made by Grant was the ratification of the 15th Amendmentwhich stated that the vote of the citizens shall not be denied because of race. This ratification secured the freedoms of African Americans as well as Native Americans. This also affected the lives of many people and prosecuted KKKs from terriozing in the South. The most negative action preformed by Grant was veteoing the inflation bill during the time of depression. This bill would have put more greenbacks into the economy, improved the economic situation, and help to end the depression.
The impact that Grant left for future presidents to come is many.He showed how political corruption has a big effect in the nation and also bringing about the spread of reforms and parties willing to end political corrupton. Avioding war with Spain was a good tactic used because America was still recovering and if the Union did enter into war, Cubans would still remain captives.By ratifying the 15th Amendment, African Americans were given the rights to vote and evovled their way through racism.
The country was not better of after Grant’s presidency. We entered into more depression and different reforms started to show themselves because of government injustices. Grant deserves a C for his attempted goals and ratifying the 15th Amendment. In a way it ws good that his administration was corrupt because it gave future presidents ideas of what not to do when you enter into the office.
